Shore Excursion for the Oosterdam Cruise – March 31, 2027

Discover the ancient civilizations, colonial heritage, and coastal traditions of northern Peru on this Trujillo shore excursion for Oosterdam passengers arriving at Salaverry Port on March 31, 2027.

Explore the Moche archaeological site of Huaca de la Luna, visit Trujillo’s historic center, discover Chan Chan, the ancient capital of the Chimú Kingdom, and experience the traditional fishing village of Huanchaco.

8:30 a.m. – Pick-up at Salaverry Port

We will meet you at Salaverry Port and begin our excursion to Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, one of the most important archaeological complexes near Trujillo.

Huaca de la Luna – The Moche Civilization

Archaeological excavations at Huaca de la Luna began in 1991. The project is led by Peruvian archaeologists from the National University of Trujillo, with support from the Backus Foundation.

Huaca de la Luna is famous for its impressive, colorful murals depicting Ai Apaec, an important deity of the ancient Moche civilization. Its adobe façades preserve remarkable reliefs representing fishermen, prisoners, warriors, and dancers, as well as mythical creatures such as spiders, reptiles, and snakes.

These extraordinary artworks offer insight into the religious beliefs, artistic achievements, and ceremonial traditions of the Moche people.

Trujillo Historic Center – Main Square, Cathedral, and Urquiaga Mansion

After our archaeological visit, we will continue to the historic center of Trujillo. We will explore the Main Square and visit the Cathedral and the historic Urquiaga Mansion.

The Urquiaga Mansion belongs to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru and houses a collection of archaeological pottery and period furniture, including Rococo-style pieces. It also preserves the desk used by Simón Bolívar and a notable dinner service presented by the Liberator to Juan Antonio Ochaita y Urquiaga in 1824.

This visit offers a glimpse into Trujillo’s colonial heritage and its role in Peru’s history of independence.

Chan Chan – Capital of the Chimú Kingdom

Our next destination is Chan Chan, the political and administrative capital of the ancient Chimú Kingdom. This remarkable adobe city once covered approximately 20 square kilometers and is recognized as one of the largest pre-Columbian adobe cities in the world.

On November 28, 1986, Chan Chan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We will visit the Nik An Palace, also known as the Tschudi Complex, the principal area open to visitors. Its impressive adobe walls feature intricate reliefs depicting sea otters, pelicans, cormorants, fishing nets, and other marine symbols that reflect the Chimú people’s close relationship with the ocean.

During the visit, you will discover ceremonial plazas, small altars, courtyards, storerooms, a ceremonial water reservoir, and the funerary platform associated with the Chimú ruler.

Huanchaco – Traditional Caballitos de Totora

We will then continue to Huanchaco, a traditional fishing village famous for its caballitos de totora, small reed boats that local fishermen have used for centuries.

These traditional watercraft represent an ancient maritime heritage associated with the Moche and Chimú civilizations. During the colonial period, Huanchaco served as an important port before Salaverry developed as a major port in the nineteenth century.

Enjoy the coastal scenery and discover the fishing traditions that remain an essential part of Huanchaco’s cultural identity.
