Trujillo Shore Excursion from Salaverry Port

Discover the history and cultural heritage of northern Peru on a small-group Trujillo shore excursion, exclusively for cruise passengers arriving at Salaverry Port. With a maximum of 16 participants, this tour combines fascinating archaeological sites, colonial architecture, and traditional coastal culture.

Huacas del Sol y de la Luna: Discover the Moche Civilization

We will pick you up at Salaverry Port and take you to the archaeological complex of Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, one of the most important cultural attractions near Trujillo.

Excavations at Huaca de la Luna began in 1991, under the direction of Peruvian archaeologists from the National University of Trujillo, with support from the Backus Foundation.

Huaca de la Luna is famous for its impressive, colorful murals depicting Ai Apaec, an important deity of the Moche civilization. Its adobe façades preserve remarkable reliefs representing fishermen, prisoners, warriors, dancers, and mythical creatures, including spiders, reptiles, and snakes.

These extraordinary artworks provide a fascinating insight into the religious beliefs, artistic achievements, and ceremonial traditions of the ancient Moche people.

Trujillo Historic Center: Colonial Architecture and Heritage

After our archaeological visit, we will continue to the historic center of Trujillo. Here, we will explore the Main Square, the Cathedral, and the historic Urquiaga Mansion.

The Urquiaga Mansion belongs to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru and houses an interesting collection of archaeological pottery and period furniture, including Rococo-style pieces. It also preserves the desk used by Simón Bolívar and an important dinner service presented by the Liberator to Juan Antonio Ochaita y Urquiaga in 1824.

This visit offers an opportunity to discover the city’s colonial heritage and its role in Peru’s history of independence.

Chan Chan: The Ancient Capital of the Chimú Kingdom

Our next stop is Chan Chan, the political and administrative capital of the ancient Chimú Kingdom. Originally covering approximately 20 square kilometers, Chan Chan is recognized as the largest adobe city in the Americas.

On November 28, 1986, UNESCO declared Chan Chan a World Heritage Site.

We will visit the Nik An Palace, also known as the Tschudi Complex, one of the main areas open to visitors. Its impressive adobe walls feature intricate reliefs depicting sea otters, pelicans, cormorants, fishing nets, and other marine symbols that reflect the Chimú people’s close relationship with the ocean.

During our visit, we will discover ceremonial plazas, small altars, courtyards, storerooms, a ceremonial water reservoir, and the funerary platform associated with the Chimú ruler.

Huanchaco: Traditional Reed Boats and Coastal Culture

We will then continue to Huanchaco, a traditional fishing village famous for its caballitos de totora, small reed boats that have been used by local fishermen for centuries.

These traditional watercraft reflect an ancient maritime heritage associated with the Moche and Chimú cultures. Huanchaco was also an important coastal port during the colonial period, before Salaverry developed as a major port in the nineteenth century.

Here, you will have free time to enjoy lunch at a beachfront restaurant, sample local cuisine, and admire the Pacific Ocean.
